Merville, named after Merville-au-Bois on France’s Western Front, was part of the Soldier’s Resettlement Initiative after WW1. Approximately 120 soldiers and family members came to Merville to become farmers. Unfortunately, a large forest fire in July of 1922 all but destroyed the entire community. Ever resilient, Merville is one of the many small unincorporated areas in the Comox Valley that began with a unique story.
Black Creek has Mennonite origins and still has two Mennonite churches. This farming community was host to several logging camps throughout the years. The original Mennonites were from the USSR and throughout the 1950’s the local Mennonite community-sponsored many German and Austrian immigrants.
Beautiful Miracle and Saratoga beaches are along this stretch of the Comox Valley which double its population in the summer months. Beachcombing and sandcastle building are popular fun activities. Oyster River, at the Northern tip of the Comox Valley has a popular walk from the Fisherman’s Point Pub to the Salmon Point Pub.
