Royston was originally a port for the logging industry to bring longs from the Comox Valley across to Vancouver. Due to this important economic situation, a breakwater was started in the 1930’s using old ships. There are 3 windjammers, 3 frigates, 3 steam tugs, 2 destroyers, 2 19th century sailing ships and a harpoon boat. The salty sea is reclaiming the wrecks, but you can still see parts of them at low tide down at the bay.
Now Royston is a bedroom community of Courtenay and Comox, with a range of properties from acreages and summer cabins to oceanfront estates. Walking trails abound along the water and on the newly created trail between Royston and Cumberland on the old railway bed.
