Insurance Checklist When Buying a Home

Often the home inspection is done and there is still information missing that is required by the home insurer, so I wanted to create a checklist for you to use.

The building itself

•  Year the house was built
•  If any additions, when those were built
•  Square footage
•  Style of home (rancher, etc.)
•  Size of any decks, porches, garages, carports
•  Type of siding
•  Foundation type
•  Type of roof
•  Details of any outbuildings

Systems

•  Electrical wiring type
•  Electrical panel type
•  Electrical panel amp service
•  Type of plumbing in the home
•  Age of hot water tank
•  Type of heating systems in the home

Updates: the age of each, and the percentage that was updated

•  Heating, including age of baseboards
•  Electrical
•  Plumbing
•  Roof

The biggest challenge is older homes with little or no information on updates, and unknown characteristics like type of wiring and plumbing.
